It is always important to give back to ones who helped build our society and were once our pillar of support.
At The New Charis Mission (TNCM), the Residents and Volunteers reach out to the elderly residing in rental flats (in Ang Mo Kio and Chai Chee) through weekly home visitations and ad-hoc activities-filled events (e.g. 4 main festive celebrations – Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, Deepavali and Christmas). Home visitations are an opportune time to provide companionship support to the Pioneers.
In line with the needs, our services expanded accordingly. One of which was to provide complimentary haircut services on a monthly basis. Through this, we have also seen professional hairstylists step in to offer their expertise on a regular voluntary basis.
Additionally, TNCM works with different communities and corporate organisations in refurbishing the houses of the elderly. The Project Heart of Love (PHOL) is targeted at transforming the quality of life of our Pioneers (aged 65 and above). Moreover, it is a platform for us to give the house a brand new outlook through cleaning, giving the house fresh coat of paint, brand new furniture and for some, new electrical appliances. Furthermore, through selecting the home layout from professionally designed templates, the elderly is involved as an active participant in deciding how they want the house to look like. Therefore, with the transformation of their living environment, the Pioneers can enjoy their twilight years in comfort in a place that can proudly regards as their “home”.
These acts are small but definitely go a long way in helping to boost the well-being of these elderly and improve their emotional state-of-mind. TNCM believes that serving the elderly is not a sprint, but a marathon – a journey with the elderly week in and out. It is about Bringing Joy to the Aged.
